I loved creating the illustrations for this book. I wanted them to resemble ancient silk paintings. I used paper cutouts for the characters. They were created on paper that was dyed with orange pekoe tea. I used different filters to create the finished illustrations. Scroll through these photos to see the evolution of the illustration from start to finish- 1. A photograph of the scene 2. An “animation” filter 3. A ”texture” filter to replicate silk 4. Finally, colour adjustment to make the image ”warmer”

I included authentic small seal script characters that reinforce the story. The first emperor ordered everyone to use this style of writing in order to unify his new empire. I list the meanings of the characters in the back of the book. Below are some examples of small seal script. These characters mean (left to right): official, palace, old person, to play, zither, to teach
